The School of Motion Experience—Rekindling the Flame

As an experienced animator, I realized that my design skills sucked, even taken a backseat in my creative journey. I needed to regain the sharp design eye I once had. This is the story of my transformation and the pivotal role played by the School of Motion Design Bootcamp in reigniting my passion for design.

The School of Motion Design Bootcamp provided me with a structured 12-week program designed to challenge
and elevate my design skills. Through a combination of expertly crafted lessons and practical assignments,
I was able to rekindle my passion for design.

Can I be accountable and continue to grow
while being unemployed?

While being unemployed for almost a year, I decided to further my education and take a referesher course, the bootcamp!
Two weeks in, I get a call about a potentional gig that sounded very promising. Third week in, I was offered the role and they wanted me to start immediately. So now, how was I going to juggle full time work + the course!
Where there’s a will, there’s a way! And I was ready…

One of the most valuable aspects of the Bootcamp was the sense of accountability it instilled in me. With regular
assignments and deadlines, I was pushed to consistently produce high-quality work. This not only improved my skills,
but also boosted my confidence in my design abilities.

How does The School of Motion program work?

The School of Motion team does an amazing job in organzing these online courses, very easy to navigate around. To summarize, their ciriculum is sorted into what I like to call “blocks” and each block represents a week.

Within in each block, you have course and homework laid out for the week, usually having two homework assignments a week.

The one big hurdle were the lengths of the tutorials; some hit close to 3 hours! Luckily you can watch it at 2x…

In each class, there was so much to learn:

I was working ~4-5 hours a day with homework!

And you may think that sounds like a lot on top of work, but it really wasn’t. I tried to balance my day
to where I wasn’t working late nights or every weekend either.

This course really helped me tighten up my producer skills and find ways of balancing the time better by
creating schedules.

Yes, I am colorblind but that’s ok! Challenge accepted!

Another reason why I wanted to take this design bootcamp was to really help me get a perspective on how to balance color / value / brightness / saturation, all those fun things!

But I knew I had to try and just find resources to help me along the way. School of Motion did a great job on helping me with color resources to build out color pallets and understand what is what!

Super Helpful!

It was also a great refresher on composition, the rule of thirds and typography. Learning a little more about type in Photoshop was a nice thing to learn since I’ve done so much type in vector programs like Illustrator or Figma.

Let's see the work!

A Transformed Design Eye
Becoming a more adept and
confident designer. Its pretty nice knowing I can create compelling
and balanced designs.

Professional Growth
The newfound skills and
confidence will open up new opportunities, tackle more
complex projects and collaborate effectively with other designers
and animators.

Bridging Animation and Design
Having a strong foundation in both animation and design allows me to bridge the gap between these two disciplines seamlessly.

The School of Motion Design Bootcamp was a turning point in my creative journey. Definitely will be looking into other courses!

It not only helped me overcome my design challenges but also reignited my passion for design. I can now approach each project with a critical eye, ensuring that my animations are not only technically impressive but also visually stunning.
